Identification
Angeli Ministrantes
Left panel of a pair of tapestry panels; design shows two angels wearing cloaks and holding staffs, coats of arms, foliage and trees.
This tapestry is one of a pair woven at Merton Abbey Mills in south London. The original cartoons, based on designs for stained glass in the south choir aisle of Salisbury Cathedral (1877-79), are in the Fitzwilliam Museum, Cambridge.
The verdure panels below the angels are adapted from the Holy Grail tapestries that Morris wove for Stanmore Hall, Uxbridge, in 1891-94.
The tapestry was made by (Benjamin) John Martin (born c.1872), Robert Uther Ellis (born c.1876) and Walter Taylor (born c.1876).
