Description

Carved oak cabinet with illuminated and inscribed doument framed within the door.

Comments

This late Victorian gothic cabinet, with an illuminated, handwritten testimonial (or address) incorporated, was made for retiring Head Master Edmond Warre. It originally contained a book of signatures, now held in the Eton College Archives Collection (ref: ED 497).
'[The] portrait [of Dr Warre by Sargent] was the outcome of a subscription by more that 1500 old Etonians, and from the same fund was presented to Warre himself a replica of the Ladies' Plate and an illuminted address in a beautifully bound book with the signatures of all the subscribers.'

Description

Inscription

Testimonial is inscribed :
'To Edmond Warre DD
Head Master of Eton
The undersigned old Etonians desire to record their gratitutde and
admiration for your career as man and boy At Eton Newcaste Scholar
and winner of the Pulling, then at Oxford Scholar of Balliol, Fellow of All Souls,
President of the University Boart Club, and Founder of the Volunteer Corps',
again at Eton Assistant Master for twenty-four and Headmaster for twenty-one
years, you have given your school the utmost you could give her - all the powers
of your mind, all the vigour of your manhood
Whilst taking the foremost part in many great and needful changes, you
have left the ancient spirit of the place unchanged. By force of character,
self devotion and sound judgment, by manliness and sincerety you have won
the respect of men and the love of boys. These words, and the gifts which
accompany them, are but the inadequate expression of feelings which fill the hearts
of many thousand Etonians in all parts of the World, to whom the name of
Edmond Warre recalls whatever is best and noblest in their
well-loved School.
Signed on behalf of Fifteen Hundred Etonians & [signatures]'
