Wooden casket/box; the hinged lid with slits
Comments
'Marking out' is the Eton term given to the practice of boys bringing slips to place in a box in a chapel or assembly hall. The name and house of the boy would be written on the slip and these were placed in 'marking out' boxes as a record of attendance. Marking out is now carried out by Masters, without the use of slips or boxes.
