Title
Legend of St George Tapestry: 'St George Leaves Home'
Description
Woven tapestry
Comments
Woven for Morris & Co. at their Merton Abbey Workshop in the style of 16th-century Flemish textiles, the Lower Chapel tapestries were designed by the mother of an Old Etonian who had served in the Great War. In the first of these chivalric images, St George is shown learning, receiving his sword and going off into the world. Renderings of Lupton's Tower and Windsor Castle appear in the background.
Tapestry one from a series of four tapestries, which together tell the Legend of Saint George.
Part of the memorial to the 1157 Etonians killed in the First World War.
Designed by Lady Chilston and woven at the Morris works at Merton Abbey under the direction of H.C. Marillier and Mr. Dearle, woven between 1922 and 1928.
