Comments
Although the mount gives the artist as 'Richard Parkes Bonnington', in fact this work is copied from Bonnington's watercolour view titled Shipping in High Seas.
The copyist, probably Charles Bentley, may have used the 1830 lithographic print of Bonnington's original, by printmaker J.D. Harding, as his inspiration. But here the distant ships have been moved to the left and a view of Gorleston Harbour, on the East Anglian coast, has been added to the right of the composition.
