Comments

Callow spent several days in Padua in 1840 and following this visit made several drawings of the city.

He exhibited other views of Padua at the Society of Painters in Watercolour, London, in 1855, and at the Royal Academy, London, in 1857 (catalogue no. 949) and 1860 (catalogue no. 343).
According to the hand-written catalogue notes of former owner Alan Pilkington, this work was exhibited at the Royal Society of Painters in Watercolours in 1853 and at 'Three Centuries of British Watercolours and Drawings', Arts Council of Great Britain, September 1951.
A similar watercolour view of the same location by Callow, with dimensions of 343 x 495mm, was sold through Christie's, London, 'Old Master & British Drawings & Watercolours' sale, 6 to 27 July 2020, Lot 109.
