Comments

These are amateur copies of works in the British Library collections by artist Samuel Hieronymus Grimm. The apparent lack of flamboyant costumes and presence of a cleric at the centre of each scene may be explained by the following description that characterises 'earlier' Montem processions:

One of the Collegers was dressed to represent a Parson, and another to represent a Clerk... They were of course restricted to black clothes, but even these admitted of considerable variety… on some occasions the Parson caused a great deal of amusement by appearing in the antiquated clerical costume of a past generation...

This carefully rendered monochrome watercolour, probably by an amateur artist after S H Grimm, depicts the Eton Montem. Unusually the focus is on the spectators at Salt Hill and the buildings beyond, rather than the Montem procession itself.

The central figure, in black clerical robes and a tricornered hat, may represent the Eton Provost, Jonathan Davies (c.1736–1809).
