Comments
It is not clear when Margaret Carpenter first met William Evans, the Drawing Master (Head of Art) at Eton, but as her earliest Leaving Portraits date from the late 1820s, it may be assumed that this work came at an early stage in their friendship. Evans is hardly recognisable from later portraits, which show a considerably sturdier physique. In 1834 he commissioned Carpenter to paint his wife, Jane, who died just three years later. But Evans’s diary suggests an enduring friendship. For example, recording: ‘Mr and Mrs Carpenter… to stay from Sat[urda]y to Monday.’ After his wife’s death, Evans bought the boarding house which still bears his name.
