Comments

From 1856 to 1868, a thorough restoration of College Hall (this room) was completed, mainly at the expense of John Wilder, a Fellow of the College.

The architect in charge was Henry Woodyer (1816-1896), a former pupil of William Butterfield and a disciple of A.W.N. Pugin. During the restoration, three unused fireplaces dating back to the 1440s, were discovered behind the panelling. Woodyer chose to leave these exposed, despite their lack of chimney flues. He designed the fire dogs and fire backs still in place today.

This is one of a collection of drawings, accomapnied by a list, written in ink by the artist, titled: 'List of Subjects for Eton College, May 1887'
