Comments
This watercolour shows an Eton master who requested dozens of Leaving Portraits from boys, sending them to sit for George Richmond or Margaret Carpenter. Edward Coleridge's requests were mainly made when he was serving as an Assistant (regular) Master. He later became Lower Master (Head of the Lower School) and a Fellow of the college. In later life Coleridge returned his portraits to the sitters. Richmond made drawn portraits of Coleridge on at least three occasions, in 1844, 1850 and 1869. This work was retained by the artist as a keepsake of his friendship with Coleridge, who was also godfather to his son, Walter.
