Comments
Jourdelay is one of the oldest names still in use in Eton and members of the family feature in archives held in the Eton College Collections that date from the 14th century, before the foundation of the College. The College acquired property from a Thomas Jourdelay in 1441, probably the land where Jourdelay’s boarding house stands today.
Painted by Davison some 500 years later, Jourdelay’s was built at the direction of Eton Head Master Andrew Snape (1675–1742). An additional wing, seen on the left, was added in the 1860s. The view is largely unchanged today, although the attractive foliage covering the building has been removed, as have most of the chimneys.
