Description
Painted view of a high street with a wide empty road in the foreground and shops and walking figures in the distance
Comments
Davison painted this group of shops on the High Street before 1933, when the block directly opposite was rebuilt in the form it takes today. Once independently owned ‘sock’ shops, selling food and supplies to Eton boys, by 1900 they were run by a group of masters under the collective title of ‘School Stores’. Here, boys could purchase snacks, stationery, sporting equipment and even boots and shoes.
12 The profits were used to fund school projects. In 1915, the Committee of School Stores reported that since its foundation over £1,800 had been contributed towards the construction of the Fives Courts and the Eton Boat House.
