Description

Painted view of a large red brick building with a garden and three large trees in front of it; two boys stand on the pavement in front of a fence

Comments

Keate House was built at the expense of Eton master Joseph Goodall (1760–1840). The righthand wing and square tower are later additions. When Goodall became Provost of Eton in 1809, the house was taken over by Dr John Keate, the Head Master after whom it is now named. This view shows the gateposts and large trees that used to frame the entrance.
Two boys standing in front of the house seem aware of the artist’s gaze. Nora Davison often attracted the attention of Eton boys as she painted and would chat to them while she worked.
This watercolour was bequeathed to Eton College by Nigel Jaques (1935–2020), who was House Master in Keate House for a single term in 1978, before relocating to Manor House.
