Description
Painted landscape view showing with figures on a riverbank, two on horseback
Comments
This work was included in the David Cox retrospective exhibition held at the City of Birmingham Museum and Art Gallery in 1890. It was loaned to the exhibition by the then owner, the prominent Scottish collector, patron and landscape painter James Orrock (1829–1919). The catalogue describes the ‘yellow light in sky’ over the ‘two horsemen and three pedestrians waiting for the ferry boat.’
A similar work of the same dimensions is in the Tate collection. The Tate version is almost the mirror image of this, showing the travellers on the opposite bank of the river, apparently returning from their travels.
