Comments
This is a view in Potsdam, near Berlin. At the time it was painted, Potsdam was the capital of the German province of Brandenburg. The mill depicted is the second of three to have been constructed on this site and was built between 1787 and 1791. Landscape, genre and marine painter Charles Hoguet was born and died in Berlin. The son of a French ballet master, he became a pupil of German landscape and marine painter Wilhelm Krause (1803–1864), before moving to Paris to join the studio of Eugène Cicéri (1813–1890). In 1841 he moved to England,
accompanying German landscape painter Eduard Hildebrandt (1818–1868), but returned to Paris in the following year to study under Cicéri’s uncle, Eugène Isabey (1803–1886). From about 1849 until his death Hoguet lived in Berlin, where he became a member of the Berlin Academy from 1869.
