Comments
Edward Duncan was the son of a watercolourist and printmaker. He was born in Hampstead, London, and from the age of 16 was apprenticed to printmaker Robert Havell (1793–1878). Duncan initially worked as a printmaker himself but also studied at the Artist’s Academy in London. He exhibited at the Society of Painters in Water Colours and the more recently established Institute of Painters in Water Colours. He was employed as an illustrator by the Illustrated London News, most notably making a series of watercolour views of the Great Exhibition of 1851.
In 1865, the year Duncan painted this work, he exhibited a view of a Wreck on the Mumbles, near Swansea. During his later career, Duncan regularly visited South Wales in the summer to paint coastal scenes on and around the Gower Peninsula. The distinctive lighthouse seen in this coastal view has yet to be identified, but this work may represent the coast of South Wales.
