Naval officer Walter William May painted coastal scenes in England, France and Holland for work and recreation, exhibiting extensively in London. After retirement, he concentrated entirely on watercolour painting. In January 1895, he was appointed curator of the Painted Hall at Greenwich. However, he died just one year later, the day after receiving news of the death of his son.
