Comments
This is one of at least two views of the château at Amboise that Callow made during a walking tour through the south of France in 1836. Callow’s visit to the town and château did not represent a highlight of the tour for him. The artist kept a diary throughout and his entry for 16 June includes: ‘…set off for Amboise, arriving there in time for dinner. In the evening we visited the château, belonging to Louis Philippe; the house being late Gothic is not remarkable for its architecture, but there is a very pretty garden.’ On 17 June he records: ‘…made a few sketches, but was very disappointed with Amboise.
