Painted landscape view with a bridge over a river in the centre, surrounded by grass; trees in the background
Comments
Although titled On the Arun, the River Arun in West Sussex is only just visible to the lower left of this view. At the centre a man is fishing in the river, while passers-by look down from the footbridge above. In the distance, the Norman tower of St Mary’s Church in the village of Climping can be seen.
Harold (Harry) Sutton Palmer, the son of a picture dealer, was born in Plymouth. By the time of the 1871 census he was in his 18th year but already his profession was given as ‘Painter in Watercolours’. He studied at the Royal College of Art, where he was awarded a gold medal. Although he remained based in London, Sutton Palmer exhibited idyllic landscape watercolours of views of English and Scottish landscapes in London and New York. Following his marriage to Maud Moore, an American, in 1889, Sutton Palmer spent periods living in California and painted Californian landscapes.
