Description
Painted view of a tree-covered hilly landscape; a plume of smoke rises in the distance
Comments
Sutton Palmer is particularly known for his views of Surrey and produced 75 illustrations for the book Surrey by A.R. Hope Moncrieff, first published in 1906. Although views of the landscape near Hindhead were included, this was not an illustration for the book and is thought to be a later work.
Hindhead, near the Hampshire border of Surrey, is a village within Haslemere parish and best known as the location of the Devil’s Punch Bowl. Located just east of the village, the Devil’s Punch Bowl is a large, natural amphitheatre and was a popular site for excursions from London. Sutton Palmer’s otherwise peaceful view indicates the influence of man and industrialisation through a distant plume of smoke rising from a charging train, to the right of the composition.
