George Graham was born in Leeds, the son of a joiner. He initially studied to become an architect for two years but also took drawing lessons at Leeds School of Art. Graham became a leading member of the Society of Yorkshire Artists. By 1923, he had moved to Winchelsea, Sussex, becoming a central figure in the Society of Sussex Painters.
Graham was a prolific exhibitor. He first showed his oil landscapes at the Royal Academy in 1908. In 1947 he exhibited his last work at the Academy, an oil painting of The Romney Marsh, not far from his Sussex home. He died on New Year's Day in 1949.
