Theodore Somervell was born in Kendal and educated at Rugby School; Caius College, Cambridge, and University College Hospital, London. After qualifying as a doctor, he served as a surgeon on the Western Front, sketching with war artist William Rothenstein during this time. In 1923, Somervell became Missionary Surgeon in the town of Neyyoor, South India.
Somervell first climbed in the Alps in 1913. He returned several times and was selected for the 1922 and 1924 Everest expeditions. Whilst climbing he made sketches and paintings, of which he wrote: 'people… will say my sketches are hard, lacking poetry… but that is where they are true records'.
