Comments

Lupton’s range of buildings, with its clock tower at the centre and two-storey oriel window, were commissioned by Roger Lupton, Provost of Eton from 1504 to 1535. Begun in 1517, the range completed the west side of the Cloisters, begun by King Henry VI. Davison’s view shows plants and railings around the base of the buildings which were removed in the early 1920s, helping us to date the watercolour. Two senior Eton figures, probably the Provost and Vice-Provost, can be seen in surplices and mortar boards as they walk towards the Cloisters. On the left of the picture is the doorway to the room now called the Verey Gallery and used for the exhibition of items from the Eton College Collections.

The railings and beds that boarded Lupton's Range can be seen in this view by Nora Davison.
