Comments
This handsome Queen Anne style building housed the Emanuel Hospital, also known as Lady Dacre’s Almshouses. The hospital provided charitable and educational support for children and the elderly. Located a few streets away from the artist’s home in Westminster, the Emanuel was under threat of demolition when Davison painted it and, despite attempts to save the building, it was demolished in 1894.
In 1892 Davison exhibited A Bit of Emanuel Hospital at the winter exhibition of the Royal Society of British Artists, which was described as ‘a brilliant little study’ in The Globe newspaper’s review.
