Comments

Choristers, in their white surplices, are here seen returning from Chapel, crossing the School Yard.
In the College’s Foundation Charter of 1440, provision was made for boys selected as Choristers to board. From 1908 to 1968 Eton ran a small Choir School, where boys were provided with a free education and meals.
The centre of the painting is dominated by Lupton’s Tower. Apart from the addition of the clock and two bell towers, this has changed little since the early 16th century. Davison exhibited two views of Lupton’s Tower on the Fourth of June 1921. The Eton College Chronicle reported that Davison ‘gives an orange tint to the brick, which, though no doubt beautifying it, can only be seen for a few minutes on a few summer days.’
