Comments
Designed by Henry Woodyer, the Burning Bush is a decorative wrought-iron lamppost that has served as a meeting point for boys, masters and visitors to Eton since it was erected in 1864. This watercolour shows the lamp-post in its original location, in the centre of the junction between Slough Road and Common Lane. In 1963, a traffic island was built to allow boys to cross Slough Road more safely and the Burning Bush was relocated to its current position on the pavement, closer to School Hall. The Hall is a memorial to Old Etonians who died in the South African (Boer) War and was completed in 1908, just five years before Davison’s arrival at Eton.
