Painted view of a street with buildings and figures; branches of a tree to the left

Comments

Durnford and Hawtrey House, the two buildings to the left of the stone-faced School Hall, were built to the designs of a Mr Ingalton. This was probably William Ingalton, an artist turned architect, or perhaps Henry Ingalton, his cousin.
The Ingaltons were a prominent family in Eton throughout the 19th century and were related to the Ingalton Drakes, who ran the College bookshop until 1900.
Two boys in Davison’s watercolour appear to be dressed in the uniform of the Eton Volunteer Rifle Corps. Founded in 1860, the Corps was formed following a national
call for volunteer troops in response to fears of a French invasion. The Corps continues today as the Eton College Combined Cadet Force.
