Comments
Davison’s view of Slough Road reveals the changing streets of Eton, following the introduction of the motor car. As early as 1911, the Eton College Chronicle reports that on the College open day known as the Fourth of June, ‘a continuous stream of motor cars’ brought visitors to the College. However, throughout the 1920s and 1930s, horses
and carts continued to be a feature of Eton’s streets and horse-drawn mowers were still being used to mow the playing fields.
The boys in the lower right of Davison’s painting are wearing top hats, a feature of the Eton boys’ uniform from the 19th century until just after the Second World War.
The Victorian lamp post seen to the right of the composition is known at Eton as the 'Burning Bush'.
