Comments
In the 18th century there were three small boarding houses on this site. In one, future Prime Minister William Ewart Gladstone (1809–1898) boarded during the 1820s. The view today looks markedly different to the one painted by Davison, as Baldwin’s Shore, the taller building to the left of Corner House, was reconstructed in the 1960s.
Davison has painted three boys running towards the house, dressed in shorts and caps.
The distinctive yellow and blue socks of one boy appear to be the football socks in the house colours of Richard T. Assheton, House Master of Corner House from 1931 to 1933.
Corner House is here viewed from the corner of Keate's Lane.
