Comments
On the right of Davison’s painting is the edge of Eton College Chapel and Upper School. These buildings are fronted by a low wall coped with stone, separating the Long Walk from the pavement. In the 18th century, the Long Walk was a busy area where boys gathered, played and purchased food from ‘sock’ sellers who operated there. By the time Davison was painting Eton, the tradespeople had been banished.
In the distance we can see New Schools, with its distinctive red brick incorporating blue diamond-shapes, known as diapering. The dome of the former boys’ observatory can be seen on the left-hand tower, but this feature has since been relocated.
