Comments
An old label states that this is 'the sketch taken by William Evans of the study of Revd. E.C. Hawtrey, Provost of Eton, for his picture, now at Eton'. The actual portrait was exhibitied at the 1891 exhibition, when it still belonged to Sam, and is now lost. There is space for a seated figure in the foreground, or for one standing further back. Provost Hawtrey held office from 1853-62, and this watercolour belongs stylistically to the earlier date. He was a passionate reader, and built up a fine library with plenty of modern literature. These rooms on the ground floor of the Provost's Lodge have remained a library ever since, for many years the home of the Marten History Library.
