Comments

This is the earliest dated work by the artist and shows his competence, two years after he had left Eton, when he was training to be a doctor. The small boy was the nine-year-old son of his tutor. He is shown resplendent in his sashed Montem outfit and placed against the backdrop of College Yard, with Lupton's Tower and the Brewhouse visible. After making a chalk drawing the artist has washed in colour over a grey was, an outdated technique learnt from his father.
This work was previously titled Thomas Thellusson Carter. However, descriptions of Evans's portrait of Thomas describe him wearing 'a light-blue jacket and trousers, and blue cap,' with 'Salt Hill in the background.' This is more likely Evans's watercolour of Thomas's elder brother, Henry, in 'Fifth Form Montem dress, standing in the School yard'. Henry died aged just 37. A memorial brass to him can be found in the Antechapel of College Chapel.

The artist, William Evans, was 19 when made this watercolour. He became Drawing Master (Head of Art) at Eton and also purchased the Keate's Lane boarding house now named after him.
