Comments
Born in Leicestershire, Glover worked as a writing and drawing master in the Midlands before coming to live in London in 1805. The move was probably prompted by the creation of the Watercolour Society, of which hewas a founder member. In 1807, Glover was the most successful artist in the exhibition, and later in the year became the President, an office he relinquished to R.R. Reinagle in 1808. Essentially a traditionalist, his greatest ambition was to recreate the works of Claude in modern times, and in his one-man exhibitions he hung his own paintings alongside those of his model. Disappointed in not receiving the recognition he thought was his due, he emigrated to Tasmania in 1831.
Glover's view of Eton is a fine demonstration of his Claudean pretensions, and in the dappled light and shade in the grove of trees on the left, he is seen at his most sensitive. The view was probably made before 1806, when the central part of the bridge which spans the Slough road and is the main route into Eton from the north, was washed away in floods. It was rebuilt in 1809 with the central six arches replaced by three larger ones. The whole structure was demolished to make way for a new bridge in 1831.
