Comments
The Meteora is a rock formation in central Greece surmounted by a complex of Eastern Orthodox monasteries. Lear has dated his work twice, presumably indicating that he returned to this watercolour to work on it further, some 15 years after beginning it.
Lear enrolled at the Royal Academy Schools at the age of 37 but soon dropped out and instead took lessons from Pre-Raphaelite artist William Holman Hunt. Hunt encouraged Lear to paint outdoors and his influence is evident in the vivid colouring of Lear's later works.
