Comments
John Ruskin was a young man when he painted this small wash view of the island of Capri on the south side of the Gulf of Naples, during a long continental tour aimed at improving his health.
Ruskin's writings had a profound influence on the young Pre-Raphaelite artists. Inspired by his five-volume work Modern Painters (published 1843–60), they rejected the work of Raphael, the later Renaissance and the artistic conventions of their time. During the 1850s Ruskin established himself as a contemporary art critic and showed particular support for the Pre-Raphaelite painters.
