Comments
This picture was owned by William, and remained in the family. Sandby, living with his brother near the Great Park, popularised Windsor and Eton views in the eighteenth century, often painting the earliest known examples. This is indeed the earliest known view of Common Lane, but it is not entirely accurate. The repeated use of incidental figures is a technique William would also employ.
This view up Common Lane to College Chapel is the earliest know record of this aspect of the College. On the left a high brick wall bounds parkland as yet unbuilt on; on the right are brick and rustic wooden buildings, with perhaps an oppidan house (Godolphin?) in the middle distance. the work is a fascinating record of this part of town at a period before it was absorbed by teh expansion of the College and its buildings.
