Comments
Sandby first visited Wales in 1770 as the guest of Sir Watkin Williams-Wynn, and the following year he visited North Wales, also with Sir Watkin. He was struck by the wild and romantic Welsh scenery which reminded him of what he had seen in the Highlands which he had visited in the 1740s.
Here Sandby heightens the sense of romance by his placing a wooing couple on a rock at the base of the waterfall.
