Comments
Sandby's views of the the North Terrace at Windsor were among his most popular subjects, and exist in numberous versions. He first exhibited a view of the Terrace at the Society of Artisits in 1766, then in 1774 exhibited a pair, 'Looking eastward' and 'Looking westward'. The present work and the companion view, both in their original frames, are such a pair, but as they are not dated it is not possible to identify them with those painted in 1774. This painting shows a rather longer view of the terrace than some versions, including not only the turret of the Norman Tower in the centre, but a glimpse of the Round Tower above the trees to the right.
The Terrace was called 'the nobles walk in Europe' by a contemporary guide-book; it appears to have been the most publicly requented part of the castle and all Sandby's images of it include figures admiring the panoramic views of the Thames Valley. He is perhaps the most poetic in this view in capturing the pale morning light casting long shadows on the ground.
