Comments
A pair with the view 'looking eastward', also in its original frame. Sandby painted far more versions of the westerly view at sunset, often with quite lurid colours as here. The buildings on the left include the west end of Queen Elizabeth's Gallery (now the Royal Library), Winchester Tower silhouetted, and the canons' houses in the distance. The several groups of figures at various points on the terrace, include a soldier in uniform, asleep on a bench with a dog beside him - possibly the same soldier seen sitting on the parapet in the companion view.
It has been suggested that the sky has been considerably retouched.
