Comments
Sandby did several views of Rochester, two of which he exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1794. Here he shows the castle keep on the left, with boats on the Medway seen through the trees on the right, and the buildings of the town faintly visiible in the background. As usual he enlivens the scene with a group of figures, here a rustic couple with several donkeys or mules laden with wares, perhaps on their way to market.
