Outside a Castle Wall, Chepstow
Comments
Sandby visited Chepstow Castle during his second tour of Wales in 1733, in the company of Sir Joseph Banks, John Lightfoot and Dr Daniel Solander, all of whom were intent on botanical rather than topographical interests. Sandby used the tour to collect the material which became the basis of this Welsh aquatint series, Twenty-Four Views in North Wales, the first part of which was dedicated to his patrons, Charles Greville and Joseph Banks. Plate 1 of this series is a view of Chepstow Castle from the river. The present drawing was presumably done during this tour.
