Half-length portrait of a young man, wearing a blue coat, blue waistcoat and white neckcloth
Comments
The sitter was a boy at Eton College from 1762 to 1770. He later became the 1st Earl of Powis.
The entry for this portrait in Lionel Cust's catalogue of the 'Eton College Portraits' (published 1910) reads:
'Hon. Edward Clive.
Born 1754, elder son of Robert, first Lord Clive, Governor of Calcutta.
Entered Eton, January 25th, 1762 (Mrs. Tyrrell’s); left 1770. Succeeded
his father as second Lord Clive, 1774. Married, 1784, Henrietta, sister
and heir of George Herbert, Earl of Powis. Created Earl of Powis, 1804.
Died 1839.
30 x 25 inches. Drawn in crayons by WILLIAM HOARE, R.A.
To the waist, in blue coat and waistcoat, slightly turned to the right ; dark brown hair
and tie wig.'
