Comments
Before Eton College owned its boarding houses, Oppidan boys (those who do not live within the original College house) resided in private boarding houses run by local women (or sometimes men), known as Dames. Following the tragic death of his wife in 1837, William Evans (1798-1877), the most famous of the Eton Drawing Masters, decided to take over a run-down house on Keate’s Lane and establish it as his own boarding house. It is still called Evans’s today.
This view was painted by Davison when Mr A.B. Ramsey was House Master (1906-25). The exterior of Evans’s is still recognisable, despite extensive internal building work in the 1970s.
The Eton boarding house, today known as Evans's, was run by House Master A.B. Ramsay from 1906 to 1925 and then known as 'Ramsay's' after him. The House Master was later J.C.Butterwick (1926-1944).
