Comments
There have been buildings on the site of Hodgson House since the 1720s but the frontage we see today was built in about 1844. Davison’s watercolour shows an ostentatious Elizabethan style façade, which earned the building the nickname the ‘Gin Palace’. Davison must have painted this picture before 1926, when some of the ornamentation was removed during renovations. Cat. no. 24 shows the later, simplified façade. Formerly a boarding house, today Hodgson House contains Rowlands, an Eton cafeteria, and Tap, a bar for senior boys.
