Comments
Designed by Henry Woodyer, The Timbralls boarding house was completed in about 1865. Sometimes hailed as the first Old Etonian architect, Woodyer was influenced by William Butterfield (1814–1900) and A.W.N. Pugin (1812–1852) and was best known as a proponent of the gothic revival style of architecture, used particularly for his church designs.
The house is named The Timbralls for the field to the north, which was used to store the timber during the construction of the earliest College buildings. Although some chimneys have been removed and the railings seen here are now gone, the building today looks much as Davison painted it, complete with an adjacent horse chestnut tree.
