Comments
Knatchbull-Hugessen left Eton aged 17 to begin his studies at Balliol College, Oxford. From 1889 he served as Rector of West Grinstead parish in West Sussex.
This is one of a group of chalk Leaving Portrait drawings by George Richmond and others, requested from the sitters by Edward Balston. Although Balston served as Head Master (1862–68), he acquired the leaving drawings between 1848 and 1862, when he was an Assistant Master (regular teacher). Balston’s widow bequeathed the collection to the college, along with chalk drawings by Richmond of her and her late husband.
