Paper label on verso of frame, inscribed in pen and ink: 'By A.C. James.'; and in another hand: 'A fancy picture of Old Dr Hawtrey / when Provost of Eton and Dr Goodford / Head Master. The picture is intended / to contrast the elegance of the former / (who was a great dandy, & liked / his Chateau Laffitte), & the blunt / boorishness which we considered to / be a characteristic of Goodford. / 1854'
