Emma Keate’s view of the entrance to the Foundation area, seen from Long Walk, shows a scene which is remarkably unchanged today. Emma, like her sisters, was a skilled amateur artist and spent much of her free time at Eton copying view of the college buildings.
She was the daughter of Dr John Keate and one of seven children. Keate served as Head Master at Eton for some 25 years, from 1809 to 1834. He was long remembered for his peculiar dress sense and his mass floggings of boys! In 1840 Emma married Richard Durnford, Rural Dean at Middleton, Lancashire, who had been a boy at Eton during her father’s time as Head Master. Her husband served as Bishop of Chichester from 1870 to 1895.
Emma’s drawing of Long Walk was bequeathed to Eton College by Patrick Strong, who inherited the work from his grandfather Hubert Brinton (1862–1940), a former House Master at Eton.
