Comments

This view of Eton College Chapel is painted from Fellows’ Eyot, the field between the chapel and the River Thames. Henry VI’s intention was to build an enormous church at Eton, dedicated to the Virgin Mary, that would become a European centre of pilgrimage. Although the chapel is not as large as Henry planned, it still dominates the landscape.
In the 1960s, Baldwin’s Bec boarding house (on the left) was extended and renovated as part of the work carried out on nearby Corner House and Baldwin’s Shore. Davison’s view is somewhat obscured today by the growth of trees and shrubs in the area.
