Comments
In his will, King Edward IV nominated his brother, Richard, Duke of Gloucester, as Lord Protector until his son, Edward V, was old enough to rule. However, following questions over the validity of Edward IV’s marriage, Richard was proclaimed King Richard III.
In the year of his accession to the throne, Richard accused Jane Shore of witchcraft and sorcery. The Privy Council threw out these charges for lack of evidence, but Richard returned with the lesser charge of adulterous relations. Her punishment was to be publicly shamed and imprisoned.
This print is a Plate from 'The Dramatic Works Of William Shakspeare Revised By George Steevens', published in nine volumes in c.1802.
